Forest Supervisor Frank H. Wadsworth built Yokahú Tower in the early 1960s. The tower opened to the public in 1963. The Civilian Conservation Corps did not build the tower.

Archaeologist Ricardo Alegría named the tower after a Taíno deity. Wadsworth built the viewpoint to give visitors forest views without a hike and defeat a cable car plan.
